Burning of Namdaemun

Namdaemun fire

On Sunday evening Namdaemun - a historic gate and a landmark of Seoul, South Korea - or Sungnyemun (숭례문) as its proper name is was burnt down. It was one of the sights I saw when I visited Seoul in November. It feels a bit sad that it was burnt down, but at the same time I am happy I got to see it before it happened.

A 70-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of arson. The same man was charged before for setting fire to the Changgyeong Palace in Seoul in 2006.

This is what the gate used to look like. According to Wikipedia the Cultural Heritage Administration of South Korea will start a three year long project to rebulid the gate and it will cost about 21 million dollars.
